When my son was little I always got the impression that he thought I was slightly incompetent. He wanted to do things his way. His way was getter than my way. He was stubborn about that. He would tell me and show me the way he thought things should be done. In summary it was NOT MY WAY.
I found a way to make that work for me. I am smarter than I look, apparently. I used my son's drive to do things his way, better than my way, to get his help cleaning my house, cleaning my dishes and pans. He vacuumed for me once he got big enough to handle the sweeper.
Lately I have noticed that my grandson like his father wants to do things his way. He comes and sweeps my floor under the birdcage on Saturday mornings. He wants me to let him do the dishes, but at three he isn't ready for that yet. The time will come.
But, last Saturday, when the sky was sunny and it was a little warmer than it had been my grandson came over. With a word to his father, he brought his own rake. We raked the backyard and made 3 bags of leaves. I missed the free yard waste day in my town by several weeks, mainly because the leaves were still on the trees. My grandson wanted his leaves, so I packed them into my car when I took him home. He got to keep his leaves.
I can see a bright future for my grandson's Saturday morning visits. It won't be long before he will be able to vacuum, and do dishes and scrub the tub. I have something to look forward to. It is a good thing I am smarter than I look.
