If you have been in the stores lately, or some people's houses or driven around my neighborhood you would be convinced that we are just a few days away from Christmas. There are lights, music, sales... Christmas is in the air and it is not yet Thanksgiving.
I know the lamenters and judgers hang labels on those early Christmas decorations and activities. There are always complaints about pushing the holiday too early. I tend to agree that is true. But, I also have decorated early because my time was limited and I fit it in when I could. Working people have to plan and schedule. But, I am retired.
I have decorated early some years for various reasons and late some years. This year I am considering. For the first time in a while I am not working. I have time. When do I want to put up the tree, and decorate the house? I don't do outside lights. Compared to my neighbors anything I do is puny. I put up a wreath and call that done.
But, the tree and all of that? When should I do it? I am thinking the week after Thanksgiving I might start. All the stuff is in the basement and it takes a lot for me to haul it up. So, I will probably start earlier than I would if I were younger and fitter.
I like to celebrate Advent, which is a season unto itself and deserves recognition. The time of waiting before the baby arrives is a special time of anticipation. I don't want to miss that in all the lights and shopping and songs. If I have learned anything in my 68 years it is this--enjoy today and celebrate it. I miss a lot when I go onto the next thing too quickly.
