When I was in school we had little gift exchanges at Christmas with impossibly low prices for gifts. You didn't get much. Usually the gifts were a pack of jacks or pick up sticks. Over the elementary years I think I got a lot of pick up sticks. I don't think they sell that toy anymore. It isn't safe. The pick up sticks were colored plastic sticks with sharp points at both ends. You dropped them in a pile and used one to take the sticks off the pile one by one without moving the others. It wasn't that much fun.
But, my grandson and I have our own version of pick up sticks. My backyard trees seem to lose a lot of branches. The sticks pile up in the yard. I like to move them so the sticks are not in the way for the weekly mowers. My grandson loves to help pick up the sticks. He finds it hilarious. I pulled a few dead branches off the redbud tree and my grandson laughed so hard you would have thought it was the funniest thing ever.
Whenever I need sticks picked up, I know who to call. My grandson loves to help with that job. I wonder if he will enjoy raking leaves?
