I had my grandson over for a playdate last weekend. One of the things that he likes to do is play my keyboard. This is a kid who has always loved music. He is becoming more and more particular about it. As he once told me--"I love classical music." I put on the classical station for him. He tells his mom--"No, not that music," when she plays something hard rock for him.
On my keyboard he is getting more and more acquainted with the sounds that the keyboard can produce. I have noticed that he seems to be making up songs. He sings to these made up songs. One of them that I have come to recognize is in a very minor key. There is a main section of this song during which he croons without words. It finishes with a very minor sounding, "to the world." I am trying to relate this to any song that he might have heard, but I cannot. I tried to record it, but he changed to something else.
One thing that interests me is the way he is beginning to finger the keys, like really playing the piano. He used to bang out his songs, but these days he is more discriminating. His parents have promised to get him piano lessons one of these days. I am looking forward to that. I think this grandson of mine will want to make music in his life. Right now, even at three years old he is on his way to becoming a piano player.
