Every year I say to myself, next year, I am not going to plant anything. I will try to keep the stuff I have going, but I am not going to try anything new. I remind myself that the rabbits eat it. I remind myself that I hardly have time for the things I need to do, let alone adding anything to the garden.
But, every year I find myself in the garden section of some store or other and I am buying things to plant. I am planning things to do. This year I bought 2 patio tomatoes. I bought a big pot of hostas. I bought a lavender plant. I bought some dianthus (pinks, related to carnations). I have some forget me not seeds. I also have a hummingbird feeder. I bought some fencing to try to protect the raspberries and blackberries that the rabbits have chewed down to the nubs every year.
I have succeeded in keeping the herbs alive. I have some nice yarrow that the rabbits apparently don't care for at all. I have day lilies, but the other lilies were finally completely killed by the rabbits. Marigolds seem to survive the rabbits so I need to plant some of those. There is perhaps a theme that you might have picked up on that I have a rabbit problem. I don't know what to do about it. I have lived in Missouri for a long time and I have never had rabbits so bold and so hungry. And I have coyotes who live down the street.
I am also trying to encourage a few rose of Sharon seeds to turn into bushes. I would like to plant them by my back patio. I have dreams. I bought garden benches. I need to take a deep breath and stop. I have added enough to the garden this year. I must save some things for next year.
