So today is George Washington's birthday. He is an odd character in history now. His sins, his mistakes are coming to the forefront. He was a slave owner. Which is a terrible thing. There is no arguing with that. But, if everyone is judged by the worst thing they did, I doubt that we would have any heroes.
Perhaps it is useful to think of the good that George Washington did. He gracefully transferred power to the next president. He did not want to be a king or start anything like that in the United States. He was a wise man in many ways. He was a man of action who listened to other wise men.
Democracy is in peril these days. A past president did not want the peaceful transfer of power. Many people in this country believe lies, or believe that the one man outweighs the votes of the majority. What is there to gain if the country pulls apart? Would we like living in a war torn land? I know that I would not.
I pray for sanity, for order and peace. I have hope for the future. I think that although George Washington was not a perfect person, we could take a lesson from him.
