The election is tomorrow, in case you need reminding. If you haven't, go vote. I did by mail a couple of weeks ago. So, I'm good. Vote like your life depends on it. I saddens me to think about how few people usually vote in even a presidential election.
I am not terribly political. I don't have a party affiliation. I vote my conscious, but I vote with thought, not just who someone tells me my conscious should be for. I vote for right as best I can.
I have always been interested in listening to political opinions, I have family members on all sides of the aisle. I learn a lot from them, from some more than others, but I learn a lot by listening to their reasoning and facts and compare it to my thinking, my priorities.
But, early this year I ran into a political discussion with a family member that wasn't very nice. When they ran out of positives, they turned to attacking me personally and ridiculing and making fun of me. It did not tend to advance their argument with me. But, it also made me reluctant to get into political discussions this year. I suppose I became rather judgmental about people on the other side. I closed my mind and decided that they are wrong and bad and stupid. Or some of those things.
But, lately I have been very anxious about what will become of this country after the election. No matter who wins, who loses. It seems we have lost good sense. Smooth transition of power in one of the hallmarks of our democracy. I worry that we won't have that.
I have read articles about bringing the country together. We need to see our similarities more than our differences. Even the family member who was so rude about politics all those months ago has more hopes, dreams, aspirations like mine than differences. Those people on the other side think that their candidate will help them achieve their hopes and dreams.
We want the same things, basically. We want safety. We want a good life for our children. We want to meet our basic needs and perhaps come out with a little something extra, if possible. We want peace. We want happiness. We want health and hope. We come at these things from different perspectives, but we want the same things.
I pray that tomorrow will be a snooze. A clear winner, with a smooth transition of power. I pray that America doesn't experience civil war or civil unrest because of this election. I pray for calm and peace. I was reminded in a column in a paper, God has already won, so don't worry. Whatever the outcome, God wins.
