I know that I have written about my granddaughter's ability to communicate before. I just don't want to forget these little things, because I suspect that soon she will be talking up a storm and I will not remember how she used to communicate.
Ellie says some words like Bubbles, Ice, Dada, Mama, Gronk (for grandma), and some others. She makes a perfect sign for More. She waves good bye and hello. But, a lot of her communication is non-verbal. She shows rather than tells.
She has a new pair of patent leather Mary Janes. She loves shoes and socks generally. She likes to go outside. But, she loves the shiny black Mary Janes. She brings them to me and fusses until I put them on her. I have gotten her number on this process and I usually distract her after the first couple of days of putting these shoes on her. But, Friday, she really wanted to go outside. She started her strategy of bringing me all the shoes, everybody's shoes. I had a pile of shoes at my feet. After I got up out of the chair I noticed the black patent leather Mary Janes were behind my elbow on the chair. I know which shoes Ellie really wanted to wear.
On a past Friday, as I left for home, Ellie came fussing at me for something. I wasn't sure what she wanted, but I handed her one of the kazoos in my bag. She seemed happy with that and carried it to her dad who had taken over the babysitting for the afternoon. Then I noticed on Monday when I arrived that she walked over and deposited that red kazoo I had given her on Friday in my bag. I guess that she only borrowed it for the weekend.
Someday, probably soon, Ellie will be talking more and she will be less demonstrative in her communication. But, she understands a lot even at 15 months and she makes herself known.
