Read to Your Child

If you want your child/children to love reading I have an A number one piece of advice.  Read to them.  Read to them every night.  Read something you loved in childhood and if there was nothing, shame on your parents.  But, there will have to be something you love today.  If you draw a blank in what to read, I recommend the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder or the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary.  Those two series could be enjoyed by all genders and all ages.

It isn't as good to use interactive or recorded books.  Read to them with your own mouth.  Read to them with your voice.  I guarantee if you read to them every night from age 2 to 12 that you will make a reader out of them.  Everybody loves being read to, it is one of the most enjoyable things.  And while recorded books have their places and are sometimes well acted and well read, a familiar loved voice reading to you can not be beat, whatever your age.

Did you know that reading to children increases their reading comprehension?  Yes, even though they are only listening, their comprehension improves.  Their vocabulary increases when they are read to!  Their interests and knowledge widens.  Reading to children is a win win win situation.

There are so many lists of great books to read, so many, that I hate to even add to the babble of that listing of books.  Anything by Cleary, or Charlotte's Web, or anything you enjoyed as a child.  Go for it, find a child and read to him or her.  In due time, practiced regularly, you will not be disappointed.  Read to them.  It works.

And you can take this as the advice of a professional because I am certified both as a reading specialist and a library media specialist. And my kid grew up to be a reader.  Read to them.
